Temporarily Work Permits

Over 90,000 foreign workers enter Canada every year to work temporarily. Most of them need to obtain a work permit before entering Canada. CIC and
HRSDC determine the eligibility of applicants who wish to receive a temporarily work permit.
A job offer from a Canadian employer and a confirmation letter from Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC) are usual prerequisites to receiving a Canadian Work Permit. Applicant’s employer,
except in some job categories, needs to obtain a labor market opinion from HRSDC. A positive labor market opinion is a written confirmation from HRSDC that shows the employer can hire a foreign worker to fill the job and this employment will not negatively affect Canadian labor market. If you have a job offer from a Canadian employer and a positive labor market opinion you can apply to receive a work permit. Work permit application must be made outside Canada except in some special cases. For example if you have a valid study permit or your spouse or parents have a study or work permit you can apply for a work permit from inside Canada.
Job categories that not require LMO
People in the following categories need a work permit but they do not need a positive labor market opinion or confirmation from HRSDC:
-
Workers who enter Canada under international agreements
-
Workers who benefit Canadians or permanent residents significantly. Entrepreneurs and intra-company transferees are in this category
-
Participants in exchange programs
-
Co-op students
-
Spouses of certain foreign workers and of certain foreign students
-
People doing charitable or religious work

Live-in caregiver lives in the private home of her/his employer (the person who receives his/her services and care) in Canada. To work as a live-in caregiver in Canada, an application to the Live-In Caregiver Program must be made.

He/she also needs to have at least one year of full time experience during the past three years or at least six months’ training.
